It does seem to pick up a lot of breath noise, but I'm not sure if it can be heard on the other end. You should find the right spot if you listen, but mine is about 2" from my mouth and centered. The Yaesu has a better, more powerful receiver but I like the Icom's display and waterfall better. I narrowed my choices down to two rigs: FTDX-101D (100W version) and IC-7610. Been thinking about selling my FTDX-3000 ( and several more radios) to upgrade to a newer, base rig. There are lots more options and tests we can do with these 2 radi. This is a brief comparison of features between the Icom IC-7300 and the new Yaesu FTDX 10. There are two other variants: the FT-710M and FT-710S which are the Japanese market 50 and 10 watt versions respectively. The Yaesu FT-710 will cover 160-6 meters with 100 watts output. The shift knob on FTDX10 is way too fine, though, if you turn it 90 degrees either side the shift value is some 50-60Hz only, so you need to keep turning that knob a lot. Yeasu FTDX10 has dedicated Width and Shift knobs, which I prefer.
